Our Head Tutor
Meet Jack — your child's English teacher.
7+ years of classroom teaching across grammar schools, alternative provision and one of the most prestigious British international schools in the world. A track record of helping students others had given up on.
Jack's story
It started at West Derby Boys' School
Jack developed a love for English Literature and Language at West Derby Boys' School in Liverpool. An inspirational English teacher first sparked that love — watching her foster a passion for the subject in some of the most unlikely and underprivileged students in Liverpool made a lasting impression and set the direction for his entire career.
He went on to study English at A-Level before completing a degree in English Literature at Liverpool John Moores University, exploring literature from a wide range of periods, genres and cultural influences.
University, PGCE, and a short break
Following university, Jack completed his PGCE and gained his ECT qualification at his former school, West Derby. During this time, he also gained experience teaching in an all-girls setting, broadening his teaching practice across different environments.
After qualifying, Jack took a short break from teaching to explore a different career path. After ten months away from the classroom, he realised how much he missed it and returned to teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic as a supply teacher — working across a variety of schools and settings throughout the Merseyside region.
Working with students the system had written off
One of the most significant experiences of Jack's career came at New Heights Pupil Referral Unit. This role opened his eyes to the inequalities and challenges many young people face daily. It strengthened his determination to support students from disadvantaged or chaotic backgrounds and help them reconnect with education through English.
Soon after, Jack joined Impact North West Schools on the Wirral — a specialist education setting for students who had been permanently excluded from mainstream schooling. Working within alternative provision, he developed a wide repertoire of teaching strategies tailored to students with SEMH and SEN needs. Many students had become completely disengaged from education, and Jack learned how to rebuild confidence, motivation, and belief in their own abilities.
Head of English at Impact North West
When Impact North West transitioned from alternative provision into a fully established school, Jack was given the rare opportunity to become Head of English during the school's opening phase. This brought extensive experience working alongside Ofsted inspectors and local authority representatives, helping to shape curriculum and practice within a newly developing school.
Alongside his role as Head of English, Jack also became Reading Lead. Encouraging students to develop a genuine love of reading became one of the most rewarding aspects of his work. Many students arrived at the school with extremely low reading confidence, and he worked hard to create a culture where reading felt accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful.
One of his English Literature students — a young person who had been permanently excluded from mainstream education and had completely disengaged from learning — achieved a Grade 7 under Jack's teaching. That result remains one of the most fulfilling moments of his career.
Royal Grammar School Guildford Qatar
Following an extremely successful examination period in 2025, during which 100% of his tutoring students achieved at least a Grade 4 in both English Literature and English Language, Jack moved to Doha, Qatar, to teach at the Royal Grammar School Guildford Qatar — one of the most prestigious British international schools in the Middle East.
The transition from teaching some of the most disadvantaged students in the UK to teaching highly ambitious international students in Qatar has been both challenging and rewarding. Jack teaches Pearson iGCSE English, works extensively with EAL learners, and teaches AS and A-Level English Literature and Language. Alongside this, he has continued tutoring UK students online, maintaining strong familiarity with the AQA specification.
Shakespeare specialism
Jack has taught all of the Shakespeare texts on the AQA English Literature specification — Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, and Julius Caesar. He particularly enjoys helping students break down the misconception that Shakespeare is inaccessible, using contextual teaching, performance, discussion and close analysis to make the works engaging and relatable for students of all abilities.
Teaching philosophy
Every student who works with Jack gets a personalised learning plan built around their specific starting point — not a generic worksheet. Jack's approach starts with a diagnostic assessment in session one, identifies the gaps, and maps a clear route to the target grade against the exam timeline.
His Shakespeare specialism and deep knowledge of the AQA, Pearson and Eduqas specifications means students get tuition from someone who knows the exam inside out — not someone learning the material alongside them.
The combination of academic rigour and genuine pastoral understanding is what sets Jack apart. Whether a student is aiming for Grade 9 or rebuilding confidence after a difficult school experience, the approach is the same: meet them where they are, build a plan, and deliver results.
