100% achieved Grade 4+ in English Language and Literature
Grade 7 from a previously permanently excluded student

These results are from students tutored by our Head Tutor, Jack Powell, during the 2024–25 academic year. All students sat AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature examinations in Summer 2025.

From permanently excluded to Grade 7

When this student arrived at Impact North West Schools in the Wirral, they had been permanently excluded from mainstream education. They had disengaged from learning entirely. English wasn't a subject they cared about — it was a subject they had been told, in so many ways, they couldn't do.

Our Head Tutor, Jack Powell, was their English teacher — and later, Head of English at the school. Over the course of two years, through patient, structured teaching that combined rigorous academic instruction with genuine pastoral care, something shifted. The student began to engage. Then to enjoy. Then to excel.

In Summer 2025, this student sat AQA GCSE English Literature and achieved a Grade 7 — a result that would be impressive in any mainstream secondary school, let alone from a student who had been permanently excluded from one.

This is not a marketing story. This is the documented result that defines what Clearmark Tutoring is built on: the belief that every student can achieve more than the system expects of them, if they have the right teacher.

A Year 11 grade jump: from Grade 3 to Grade 6

This Year 11 student came to us in the autumn term, predicted a Grade 3 in English Language — below the Grade 4 pass that sixth forms and employers require. Their confidence was low, and previous tutoring hadn't worked.

Over 14 weeks of structured, weekly sessions, our Head Tutor rebuilt their approach from the ground up: exam technique, sentence-level accuracy, and targeted practice on the specific question types where marks were being lost. Crucially, the student's confidence grew alongside their skill.

In Summer 2025, they achieved a Grade 6 — three grades above prediction. Their parent described the experience as "life-changing for our whole family."

Stretching high-ability students to top grades

Working with high-ability students aiming for Grade 8 and 9 is part of what our Head Tutor does at the Royal Grammar School Guildford Qatar every day — teaching AS and A-Level Literature and Language to some of the most academically ambitious students in the region.

We'll publish full case studies from our 2026 cohort as they sit their exams. In the meantime, if your child is targeting the highest grades, book a free consultation and we'll discuss exactly how we'd approach their preparation.
